Dear Reader,
This will be super short because, frankly, I had too much wine this evening! Now, mind you, almost ANY wine is too much wine for me, and I think I had two glasses this evening.
Here's the skinny version of the day:
1. Could barely drag myself out of sleep again today. What is up with that? And where's that cortisol surge rye supposed to get in the morning? Oh, yea. I would know if I had done that cortisol test yet, which I haven't.
2. Got a really good mani/pedi for $30
3. Had the appointment with the functional medicine doctor. She seems to have a much more intensive practice than my former doctor has.
4. Was first shown in to a white woman, instead of the Korean doctor I was expecting. I'm not sure what was going on, but I casually questioned her until I found out that she was not an M.D. But had, instead, studied naturopathy. Now, I'm all for naturopathy, but I had picked the Korean doctor because of the med school she attended and because she is an associate professor at a New York med school ... or some kind of teaching position there. I told her I was not comfortable with seeing her and wanted to see the doctor I had come to see. This was a big step for someone who has been steeped in the Southern culture for women for 25 years. I did like the Korean doctor very much and am looking forward to seeing her.
5. Going over all my medical history and surgeries and hospitalizations, etc. is always pretty depressing. I can handle the day to day pretty well. But looking at the whole picture takes a chunk out of me each time.
6. I missed the call back from the trauma psychologist. But at least she called back.
7. We had dinner in a nearby town with an incredibly rich couple. I mean ... really, really rich. As in, I have never seen a house like this, much less been in one! There was a gate you had to go through to get into the neighborhood with a guard and a guard house, and before we could go in, the guard called their home to speak to them to be certain it was ok! When we pulled up I said, "wait a minute!" and grabbed the camera just to snap a picture of the house to show our daughter!
8. I am down to four picture boxes in the dining room now.
9. I did manage to make a little progress in the closet room which has been such an unbelievable disaster.
And that's it for me! Good night!

Day 303 - Another Day, Another Dollar ...
Dear Reader,
... another dollar spent! My husband says he's going to ban me from shopping online at night in bed! Silly man. As if he could! :-). Really, though ... I hate going shopping and I so prefer just ordering online, usually through amazon since I have a prime membership, so I don't pay shipping. And every day is like Christmas! I never remember what I ordered so I never remember what's in the box. It can be something as mundane as the clips to hold my ironing board on tight, or a Clorox cleaning product I can't find in the village, or a scrub brush. It's still always fun to open the packages!and you can almost always find things on sale. For instance, after my trip into Manhattan to see my friend, I realized I needed a different pair of black heels since the ones I wore tore my feet up. I looked at the Clark's website and found a beautiful shoe for $120, but my size was sold out. Well, I found the exact shoe on amazon for $62!
My husband let me buy a plane ticket for my former housekeeper to come up for a few days in September to help me with the basement. I would take her to see a Broadway play, but she is deaf, so I don't know whether to do that or not. It would be a lot of money to spend if she couldn't enjoy it. I spent five minutes in the closet-to-be room today. It's probably the most disorganized room of them all. I got a little dab done in there, and that's going to be the plan each day now. Five minutes, get a little dab done.
I called the psychologist today. Had to leave a message and I'm sure I sounded like a complete idiot. "Hi! I've got a lot of trauma and PTSD big time and you seem to have written the book on that. Ha! Ha! But really, your resume is very impressive! Anyway ..." And it wasn't one of those recordings that gave you the option of deleting and re-recording. Ouch.
My husband had an appointment with a doctor in a nearby town. He said that he is excellent and teaches at one of the medical schools, etc. I'm really glad that he found a good one.
I go to see the functional medicine doctor tomorrow. I am really hoping that this will be good. I want to push forward on a lot of my health issues, as you already know.
I got some work done in the dining room today. Put up some linens that had been stacked there and emptied the box with all of our games in it. I have them in the coat closet so they'll be handy. Now we just need some friends! Local friends, that is.
I'm having some problems with the interior designer. I may have mentioned that I found out that she had submitted the furniture order, which she wasn't supposed to do until after we got the figure for the stairway carpet that has to be replaced. Only got that figure today and it's just shy of $10,000. It's a beautiful staircase that floods out as you approach the entry floor. But it pops our budget by a good $3000. So I had to write her a letter about all of this and I found that an email I had written her wanting to change the order for the sunroom had actually gone out on the day that the purchase order was sent. She said I would have had to change my order within three days ... well, I did! And she wasn't supposed to have placed the order anyway. So I copied the woman here whose in charge of all this and my husband my email to her telling her that the order should not have been placed and we were going to have to adjust it some now based on the rug price ... which had been the plan all along. The nice thing is that I didn't have to agonize over the wording of the letter since I'm not in the South. I was able to just write a straight-forward letter saying ... nope! Can't do that. Figure it out.
I had an interesting/very sad visit with the man who is going to be installing our blinds. He, too, is just developing an interest in history and has been doing some reading of his own on WW 1 and 2 and also our revolutionary war. He told me a horrible, little known fact about what the English did to American POWs. They crowded them into buildings in Manhattan like sardines and left them to just die. They did the same thing with boats. Just had the boats moored off the coast of New York and, when the smell of the dead and dying prisoners got to be too bad, they sank the ship.
Wow! Just unbelievable.
The sad part, though, was he said something about his wife and the woman from our college asked about her. So I asked if his wife was ill, and she has stage 4 colon cancer. She is only 49. They have been married for 29 years and have known each other since they were children. They have three daughters, two of whom are still at home and one who lives just down the street. We talked for a good while about her and the family and how they were trying to handle it. I hugged him and told him I would be praying for God to sustain him through this. He is obviously very torn up about it. I saw that he has written me the sweetest email thanking me for being so kind to him. The poor man. What on earth is he going to do? How do you lose your spouse and go on?
Speaking of spouses, I had another awful dream this morning in which my husband was being terribly cold to me and then I found out that he was having an affair and had no intention of stopping. And it was with some floozy! This one didn't wipe me out like the one yesterday did at least, though it lingered a long time and was very hard to pull out of. I wonder if I didn't have this extra 40 pounds in the middle of my body ... would I still have these dreams? I keep reminding myself that this is my place of healing. This is the place where I am going to get healthier. Right now my focus is on unpacking and getting settled and getting the house decorated. But after that ...it's going to be about me and about exercising and losing weight and getting more healthy. I hope! Everyone needs to NOT HAVE ANY CRISES DOE A WHILE! It used to be like clockwork. I'd lose ten pounds, and someone in my family would have a massive crisis! Or I was in that big car wreck. Or something else would storm into my life and throw me off course. So ... no more! Please! For the love!
Cheers,
Lisa

Day 304 - I DID NOT GO TO THE CHIROPRACTOR TODAY!!!
Dear Reader,
Darn and double-darn! This is what happened, I had another bad dream about my husband this morning and it messed me up really bad and ruined the day. I'd tell you the dream, but it's too ridiculous. I've had worse ones that didn't take me out as bad as this one did. It was another one where it suddenly became obvious that he didn't love me and he was being cold to me and hanging out with other girls. And there was a helicopter involved! See ... I told you it was pathetic. I couldn't pull out of this one and before I could get anything done, the painters arrived. When the physical plant came in with them, he saw my face and, even thigh I wasn't crying, he could tell that something was wrong. He kept asking, "Are you okay? Is everything alright?" He looked really concerned so I finally told him our story. No ... we're both still tormented by a breakup we went through 38 YEARS AGO!!
After a while the main guy for the painters who owns the business came in. He's such a sweetheart! He always makes me smile. I hadn't seen him in a week and he was all Italian-New York "I missed you!!" Anyway, I asked him about me leaving the house when his painters were here and he asked me not to. Early in his career someone said a ring was missing and blamed it on his guy. Later, they found the ring, but never told him. So now, he just prefers that the owner always be at the house. So ... there you go. No chiropractor today. I'm in bed with a pillow under my arm and a heating pad around my shoulder.
I'm in pain all over tonight, pretty bad. I've had Tylenol the last two or three nights so I don't want to take any tonight. I'm worried I'll become allergic to it if I take it too often.
We started watching House, M.D. Really like it! The last two episodes have involved something's related to my immune system problem, especially the one we watched tonight. A young teenage boy comes down with anthrax. They give him the antibiotic for it and he gets worse and breaks out in horrible hives all over and his throat swells shut almost causing him to die. In the end, it turned out he had leprosy as an undiagnosed, underlying condition. Then when they gave him the antibiotic it started killing the anthrax bacteria and his immune system started attacking the dead bacteria. They even did a little visual of it and I told my husband, "That's it! That's my complement system!"
There really isn't much to tell you about other than I was despondent almost the entire day. I got better as soon as my husband got home and cooked dinner and did a real thorough cleaning of the kitchen.
So, the big question at the moment in my mind is this: when do I start exercising? Yea ... I don't know the answer to that one, yet.
Cheers,
Lisa
P.S. I am almost always hungry at bedtime!
P.P.S. I was so despondent that I went for the Nutella today!
And ... (I don't know what the next P.S. designation is) I researched trauma psychologists in my county and I think I have found the perfect person. She is 20 minutes away, according to google, but it's all on a regular road. No highways. So I can handle it in the snow, I presume anyway. Trauma is her thing and she's done a lot of post-doc work in it. I did go get something to eat, but just a raw corn tortilla and one slice of turkey lunch meat. I'm glad I went down because I had forgotten to put a diaper on my Jack Russell!

Day 305 - I WILL GO TO THE CHIROPRACTOR TOMORROW!!!
... NO MATTER WHAT! I am in so much pain in my shoulder and down through my bicep. It keeps being really bad at night, but then the next day it feels fine and I think, "I don't have time to go to the chiropractor! I have too much work to do!!" Well, no more. This is ridiculous. My whole arm feels, like it's burning.
I got up at 7:30 this morning! And stayed up. I know, it's a miracle. But, actually ... I got up because I was hungry and, once I was up I decided to stay up. Give it a whirl! I did fine until about 11:30 when I felt like I hit a wall. Had to lay down for a little while before I went to see the doctor.
He seemed nice enough. I'm only going by his reviews online. We had a long talk about WW1 and WW2, believe it or not. He asked me about my accent (what accent!?). Turns out he married a woman from San Marco, although they are divorced now. We got to talking about central Texas and BBQ and from there about the German communities in Texas (my favorite BBQ place is in Lockhart and is "Kreuze's"). He asked me if I knew why there were so many German communities in Texas and I said no. It turns out that a lot of the German POWs were taken to POW camps in Texas. They thought they had died and gone to heaven! They were out of the war, well fed, and doing farming. When the war was over, 280,000 of the 500,000 POWs decided to stay. Isn't that interesting? Who knew?
From there we were off to the races! I told him that I was finishing The Last Man Out about the Palawan Massacre of American POWs and had gotten The Rape of Nanking to read next. He told me I'd have to have a strong stomach to read the book because it is unbelievable what the Japanese did to these 300,000 Chinese people. Then he told me that the Japanese were also doing medical experiments like the Germans did, though the Japanese made the Germans look like children. He told me about the city where most of the experimentation took place, and how one person who was there said that if he told the names of the people who worked there, no one would believe him because they are now presidents of medical schools and hospitals and things of that nature.
We also talked about the nuclear bombs. He told me about a Japanese historian who has written about them. He says, I can't remember the figures for sure. But he said that it was estimated that 20 million Japanese would die if the Allies went in, because they were going to fight down to the last woman and child. And that an estimated 10 million more would die from starvation. And that it was estimated that one million Allied soldiers would die. So, losing 200,000 in two bombings was, I his eyes, a very small price to pay.
I read a few years ago a speech given by a Japanese Christian pastor from Nagasaki about the bomb. Nagasaki was not the city on which the bomb was supposed to be dropped. I don't remember what all happened that it was bombed, but it seems like it was through a series of circumstances that Nagasaki was bombed. This Japanese pastor said, in essence, that it was God's judgment in the city for all of the Christians they had martyred through the centuries, that led me to a book called Silence, which is a novel about a priest in the 1400's, I think, who is snuck into the area and is being kept hidden. I didn't finish the book, life intruded. But there had already been a lot of crucifixions of Christians. I don't know if anyone would agree with the pastor that the bomb was God's judgment, but it was interesting to find that perspective about it.
Well, that's it for the day. I've been chatting with a niece of mine on Facebook this evening. I'm very grateful for Facebook because it has made it possible for me to get to know her. My brother and her mother divorced when she was around five. She was pretty much a complete brat. After the divorce, I basically never got to see her or her brother again. They lived in another state and their mother hated all of us for some reason. She turned both kids against my brother and he was not able to have anything to do with his son until he was around 18 and started letting my brother be around some. But the daughter remained convinced that we were all terrible, especially her father. My brother would never talk bad to his kids about their mother, so he never told them about all the things she did. Like threaten to put a hit on him. And since her father was involved in the mafia, this was not an empty threat. But, when the daughter was in her late 20's she came across a tape her mother made of an argument with my brother, and the girl's eyes were opened. She has finally formed a relationship with my brother, but I haven't seen her since she was five. We became Facebook friends a few years ago. I started liking some of her posts, and she started liking some one mine. Then we started making short comments. "Cute!" Then I started making longer comments and talking about how much I loved watching her love her kids ... who I have never seen. And now, this evening, we've been having a heart-to-heart about mothering and the difficult choices you have to make. Yeah!! Thank You, Lord! I am grateful for every bit of reconciliation there.
Cheers!

Day 306 - Waiting For My Husband to Get Home
Dear Reader,
I'm sitting in the front porch waiting for my husband to arrive home from his trip to Texas. I've worked really hard on the house while he's been gone and I think you can really tell the difference. He won't let me work this hard when he's home, so I really pushed and, let me tell you ... I am TIRED!
I've got my to-do list ready for tomorrow. I have the doctor's appointment WHICH I WILL NOT BE LATE FOR!!
Yay!! He got home just as I was writing that. I'm so glad! I'll be going to see my mother for her birthday and he'll get to be the one left at home and see how he likes it!
He loved the way the house looks. The new arrangement and the pictures being up look great and make everything so much prettier and homier. Is that a word? It doesn't look right.
We should get propane for our pool tomorrow and get it heated finally. That will be great. If we both started just trading water for twenty minutes, tyrant would be a good start.
I'm planning on doing some work on all of the outside areas tomorrow. Not the major pressure washing, etc. just sweeping off cushions and furniture, tidying up, and washing table tops. Just try to get everything neat and not so grossly dirty! I would LOVE it if we could put a real roof over the pergola some day. That would be wonderful.
I'm very excited to be seeing a doctor tomorrow and getting all of my prescriptions taken care of. I hope he's good!
It's weird that we are into August already. This makes three seasons that I have basically missed.
That's about it for tonight. I hope you have a good start on your week tomorrow.
Oh. Darn. I just remembered that I have to find my social security card. Bummer.
Cheers!
Lisa
I'm sitting in the front porch waiting for my husband to arrive home from his trip to Texas. I've worked really hard on the house while he's been gone and I think you can really tell the difference. He won't let me work this hard when he's home, so I really pushed and, let me tell you ... I am TIRED!
I've got my to-do list ready for tomorrow. I have the doctor's appointment WHICH I WILL NOT BE LATE FOR!!

Day 307 - Quickly! Quickly!
Dear Reader,
I'm going to do this quickly because I am really tired! Definitely not staying up super late tonight!
I have my appointment set with the functional medicine doctor on Wednesday. Yay!
I had the furniture in my study rearranged today. I'm not at all sure it's going to work like I have it, but I won't really be able to tell until I have boxes unpacked. I am sure that the bookcase is where I want it, so at least I can unpack my books and get them loaded up. There is a large closet in the sunroom area that I can use to put all my notebooks of Bible studies I've written. The other rooms don't have these big radiators, but this one has two which take up a lot of wall space. I wonder why they are there. At least it all looks pretty straight forward, I had both offices pretty well in order.
But our son's room is just awful! I don't have the faintest idea what to do in there except to close the door!
I went to a diner this evening and ordered the roast turkey. It was just deli slices of turkey lunch meat on top of some dressing with that yellow, canned gravy on top! I didn't eat the dressing and turned down the bread, but I did eat the gravy, knowing that it would have wheat in it. My tongue swelled up and an abcess or whatever has broken out on the inside of my lower lip. So I'm going to have to be more careful in the future.
Later!

Day 308 - A Very a Pleasant Day
Dear Reader,
Well, all my plans yesterday to go to sleep came to nothing. I couldn't get to sleep until after 4:00 this morning. I'm pretty sure I made myself tense just enough to cause me to pump that cortisol and adrenaline! I was very frustrated. I was so tired right until the moment I turned off the light. I slept till 11 or so this morning.
The first thing I did was get dressed nicely and drive to the salon where I had my hair done to give the girls their tips. I found a parking place not too far from there and started walking. I saw a farmers' market on the sidewalk so I out in money for 40 minutes. Were talking about a major investment here: 35 cents! I started walking and walking without seeing the salon, so I finally stopped and checked their location on my iPhone, and I had it wrong in my head. They were much further away than I had thought. Pick contemplated whether or not to move my car closer, but didn't want to waste that 35 cents! So I kept walking, even though I was in bad shoes.
I got there and the gal who did my color remembered me and gave me a great big hug, which was so nice! The other girl wasn't there, so I left her tip with the manager. I left the store and got down the block by about two store fronts, when a deluge descended! I ducked into a florist shop and stayed there for a few minutes when I decided to just go on. I got a little newspaper and used it to cover my head and walked in till I came to a nice gift shop. I turned in there and checked it out and bought some bath products. The owner was so sweet; she offered to lend me her umbrella! I declined and then went on, not even bothering to use the newspaper to cover my head anymore. There's something liberating about walking along in the rain, not trying to cover yourself at all. But ... that got old pretty quickly and I decided that I had had enough liberating, so I went into a sushi restaurant. The phrase, "wet as a drowned rat" describes me perfectly. I had a delightful meal and will absolutely be going back. The rain had stopped when, suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck right across the street from the restaurant! BOOM! Wow! It was so loud!
The rain stopped and I finished up and paid my bill and prepared to leave just as it began raining really hard again! So, I just took my time walking until I got to my car and drove home. I know it may sound strange, but it was a very enjoyable outing!
The rest if the day I worked very hard! Too hard! But I got a lot done. I'm down to one box in the kitchen and one box in the dining room and the pictures that need to be taken out of their boxes. I even got some pictures hung, did some laundry, and cooked my dinner. I'm really tired now. When my husband is home, he won't let me work this hard.
My goal tomorrow is to finish the little dab of laundry left and empty that big box in the kitchen. Then I need to put away everything that is in two big bookcases that have to be taken upstairs. I want to finish up the dining room and sweep and mop in there and arrange things in the sunroom and sweep and mop in there. I'd like to figure out a new arrangement for a set of white plates I have. This will be the fourth house in which they have hung. And, please do note that I took pains to not end that sentence with a preposition! I also want to get a lot more pictures hung.
Some physical plant workers are supposed to come tomorrow to move some furniture for me. Turns out they work on Saturdays. After my furniture in my study is rearranged, I'll be able to start unloading books and get a lot of things cleared out in there. Then I have to do a concentrated search for my social security card!
I ate well today. And I filled in the form for the functional medicine doctor and got that sent in. But as far as my health goals go, that's all I got done. I was just glad I was able to do all that working in bad shoes VB. my ankles coming out of joint and was able to work hard the rest of the day. I think it is all going to be so beautiful when it all comes together! And the more I get done, the less overwhelmed I am. Which is just silly of me. There is still an absolutely overwhelming amount of work to be done!
Today was our son's 29th birthday. It's such a joy to have him sober. Now if he can just get a job. He does very well when he has a job. Today was our daughters's last day to intern at the place she has enjoyed so much. So both of our kids are in limbo at the moment which makes my husband very on edge. But I am confidant that things will work out well for them. One of us has to be the optimist, and it seems to have fallen to me!
At this point I now have a vet, a chiropractor, a hair salon, a dry cleaners, a grocery store, a mall and a drug store. I haven't found a nail salon yet; the prices at the one I went to with my daughter were too high for regular use. And I may have both a regular doctor and a functional medicine doctor.
Have I mentioned that I am NEVER MOVING AGAIN!!! This is way too hard!
Cheers!
